From Vision to Success: How to Write a Plan that Works
These four day-long sessions will guide campus and district leadership teams through the four phases of the improvement planning process.
To get the best value from this educational program, we recommend scheduling the four sessions in order, with about a month between each
session. This way, participants will have time to digest the information in each session, and begin taking action the recommended action steps
before the next phase of improvement planning begins. However, if you prefer, you may select only the session(s) that interest you, and schedule
them independently.
During this advanced training, teams will begin with the foundational elements of data collection. Next, they will learn and practice data
analysis protocol. Then, they will connect that analysis to instructional planning, delivery, evaluation and professional teacher development.
Participants will be assigned "homework" at the end of each day, allowing them to apply their learning to campus data. Each one of these
sessions may be used as an independent day of professional development.
-
SESSION 1
Learn how to determine which data is most important to collect. Create a data collection and disaggregation plan that includes a
timeline and a structure to empower team involvement. Learn how to "begin with the end in mind" so that the campus doesn't drown in trivial
data and miss what is most important.
-
SESSION 2
Read and understand the data. Write problem statements and determine root causes. Learn why it is important to write the Comprehensive
Needs Assessment (can) in a narrative format, and how to increase the probability that readers will understand the identified needs.
Prioritize needs and write an effective meaningful CNA.
-
SESSION 3
Using your CNA, develop SMART performance objectives and mission-critical strategies that address defined needs and tightly align with
district goals. Learn how to develop appropriate SMART performance objectives, with the right amount of stretch and vigor. Learn how to
determine which types of strategies have the potential to create the greatest amount of growth, and learn how to know how many strategies are
needed.
-
SESSION 4(1/2 Day)
Create a timeline and detailed procedures for improvement plan implementation, as well as formative and summative reviews. Conduct a
quick review of the improvement plan to identify missing components. Develop procedures to ensure any missing components, including those
named as "secondary requireds" (required components that are not part of the primary focus) do not get skipped or ignored. Learn where and
how to place the "secondary requireds" so that they do not diminish the important focus of the plan. Leave with well-developed procedures to
use the improvement plan to focus teaching and learning, and ultimately, improve student achievement.
